Ruth Tabancay
"Before I became an artist, the career choices I made involved many engrossing hours studying bacteria and human tissues under a microscope. But it was years after I began studying art that I was startled to find I was re-creating, with textile materials, the microcosmos that had been imprinted into my subconscious. Stitched teabags recalled vast plains of squamous epithelium; ikat weavings, striated muscle; liquidamber fruits, viruses. Regardless of the materials or technique, my work continues to be informed by that early imagery. Recently, coming full circle, I have used the scanning electron microscope to take highly magnified pictures of my current media, fiber and cloth, which I hand-wove using the computerized Jacquard loom." -Ruth Tabancay
